How to use a male masturbator (and keep it clean)
Strokers, sleeves and automatic cups: the right lube, the right way to clean them, and how to make one last.
A male masturbator is a soft, textured sleeve you slide onto your cock. Some sit in a hard case, some are squeezable and see-through, and automatic cups add suction, vibration or rotation so you don’t have to move at all.
Choosing one
- Open-ended sleeves are easier to clean; closed-end cases create suction.
- Tighter, more textured sleeves feel more intense. Softer, smoother ones last longer.
- Automatic cups do the work for you: handy for edging or hands-free sessions.
- See-through sleeves let you watch; a case makes it easier to grip.
How to use one
- Warm it up. Run warm (not hot) water through the sleeve for a minute: it feels much more real.
- Lube generously, inside the sleeve and on you. Use water-based lube only: Fleshlight and TENGA both say oils and silicone lube can damage their sleeves.
- Start slow. With a case, loosening or tightening the end cap changes the suction.
- With an automatic cup, start on the lowest setting and work up, and keep the motor and charging port dry.
How to clean it
- Clean it straight after use, while the lube is still fresh.
- Take the sleeve out of its case and run warm water through it. Fleshlight suggests about 30 seconds, then blocking one end, filling it and giving it a shake.
- Follow the maker’s instructions on soap and on turning it inside out: TENGA says to invert and use mild soap, while Fleshlight says never turn the sleeve inside out and to keep soap for the case.
- Never boil a soft sleeve, and don’t use alcohol or harsh cleaners.
Dry it properly (the step everyone skips)
Water left inside a sleeve is how mould starts. Shake it out, pat the outside dry, then let it air-dry somewhere cool and ventilated before you put it away. Many guys stand it on a clean towel or a drying stick overnight. A light dusting of cornstarch-based renewing powder keeps opaque TPE sleeves from going sticky (Fleshlight says not to use it on clear sleeves).
Sharing and when to replace it
Soft sleeves (TPE, TPR and “cyberskin”) are porous: they can be cleaned but not fully sanitized. Healthline advises against sharing porous toys, or using a fresh condom for each person if you do. Replace a sleeve if it tears, stays sticky, smells or shows any spots of mould.
Tip: A good water-based lube makes all the difference; our lube guide explains which to pick.

Good questions
What lube should I use with a masturbator?
Water-based. Makers like Fleshlight and TENGA say oils and silicone lube can damage the sleeve.
How do you clean a stroker?
Run warm water through the sleeve straight after use, follow the maker’s advice on soap, then let it air-dry fully before storing.
How do you dry a masturbator sleeve?
Shake it out, pat it dry and leave it to air-dry somewhere cool and ventilated before putting it away.
Can you share a masturbator?
Soft sleeves are porous and can’t be fully sanitized, so it’s best not to. If you do, use a fresh condom for each person.
How long does a sleeve last?
There’s no set lifespan. Replace it if it tears, stays sticky, smells or shows mould.
