Urethral sounding for beginners: a safe, step-by-step guide

What sounding feels like, the gear to start with, and how to do it slowly, cleanly and safely.

2 min read · Updated 7 November 2026

Urethral sounding means slowly sliding a smooth, sterile rod (a sound) into the urethra, the tube you pee through. For the guys who love it, it is one of the most intense sensations there is: a deep, full feeling from the inside, and for some a way to reach the prostate from the front. It is also play that rewards patience and cleanliness more than almost anything else, so read this before you start.

Choose your first sound

  • Start slim: around 4–6 mm wide.
  • Soft silicone bends with your body and is the gentlest start. Smooth or beaded stainless steel is heavier and lets gravity do the work.
  • Look for a rounded tip and a handle or flared end you can hold.
  • Avoid anything with seams, rough edges or a coating that could chip.

We sell a soft silicone sound in several widths and a beaded stainless steel sound in 6 and 8 mm.

Clean is everything

  • Wash your hands and your cock with soap and water first.
  • Sterilize the sound before every use: boil steel for a few minutes, or follow the cleaning advice for silicone.
  • Use a sterile, water-based lube. Single-use sachets are ideal, so nothing contaminates the tube.
  • Pee right after play to flush the urethra.

Step by step

  • Relax. Being partly hard, not fully erect, usually makes it easier.
  • Lube the sound generously and add a little to the opening.
  • Hold your shaft straight out and rest the tip at the opening.
  • Let the sound sink in under its own weight, or guide it with the lightest touch. Never push or force it.
  • If it stops, pull back slightly, add lube and let it settle. Some guys find it helps to change the angle of the shaft.
  • Go only as deep as feels good, then slide it out just as slowly.

When to stop

Stop straight away if you feel sharp pain, see blood, or the sound will not move. A little stinging when you pee afterwards can happen; burning that lasts, fever, cloudy urine or blood are signs of irritation or infection, so see a doctor. Never use anything not made for sounding, and never leave a sound in during sleep.

Tip: Keep your first sessions short, around five to ten minutes, and wait a few days between them while you learn how your body reacts.
